Past Indefinite Tense

Past Indefinite is the part of Tenses and it is also known as Simple Past. This tense helps us to know and understand the work or action completed in the past.

Definition of Simple Past or Past Indefinite can be given as The action which is mentioned simply in Past and has proper information about work completion with its definite time. In short, we can understand that an action which has completed in some time and the speaker has knowledge of the time when the work was completed.

Simple –

Sub + V2 + Object.
e.g. Raju ate momos today.

Negative –

Sub + did + not + V1 + Object.
e.g. Raju did not eat momos today.

Interrogative – 

Did + Sub + V1 + Object?
e.g. Did Raju eat momos today?

Interrogative negative –

Did+ Sub + not + V1 + Object?
e.g. Did Raju not eat momos today?

Double Interrogative –

W/H family + did + Sub + V1 + Object
e.g. Why did Raju eat momos today?

Double Interrogative negative –

W/H family + did + Sub + not + V1 + Object?
e.g. Why did Raju not eat momos today? 

                     

Rules of Past Indefinite Tense

There are some factors required to know and understand that where can we use Simple Past or how to identify a sentence of Past Indefinite.

Rules or factors are mentioned below: -

·  To express an action that has been completed in the past at a definite time.
   Example──
    I did this.
    I have done this.
    I did this yesterday.

·  Past Indefinite is used when the sentence has or denoted by last, ago, yesterday, back, before, formerly, any fixed time, etc.
   Example──
      We heard a horrifying news last night.
      The train didn’t come on time yesterday.

·  To show past habits, indicated generally by words like often, seldom, never, normally, generally, always, frequently, rarely, daily, used to, etc.
   Example──
     Mohit frequently visited his home town in past.
     Whenever I made him call, he pretended to be ill.
     Kaif seldom completed his homework even when he had time.

·   Past Indefinite is used after “It is time”
   Example──
    It is time gupta’s family started believing in god
